What UAE humidity does to wood, and how to build around it

Timber takes on moisture when the air is damp and gives it back when the air is dry. It changes size every time it does, and that never stops.

Timber never stops exchanging moisture with the air around it. It takes some on when the air is damp, gives it back when the air is dry, and changes dimension every time it does. That is not a defect and it does not stop with age. A hundred year old cabinet is still doing it.

Which means the useful question is not which timber survives the climate. It is how a piece is built.

What actually moves, and in which direction

Wood moves very little along the grain and a great deal across it. A two metre long board barely changes length. The same board can change noticeably in width between a humid week and a dry one.

That single asymmetry explains most furniture failures. A wide solid top wants to change width, and if it is fixed rigidly along both edges it cannot. The stress has to go somewhere, so it opens a split, usually along a glue line where the timber is already interrupted.

Doors bind in one season and swing freely in another for the same reason. Mitres open at the corner. Panels in a frame crack if they were glued in place rather than left to float.

Why intermittent cooling is the hard case

People assume heat is the enemy. It is not, particularly. Timber copes with steady conditions at almost any reasonable level, because it reaches equilibrium and stays there.

What it does not cope with well is swinging. A room cooled to a low humidity all day and then closed up overnight puts the timber through a cycle, and repeated cycles are what loosen joints and open glue lines.

This matters here more than the raw climate does, because a lot of villas are cooled by room rather than throughout, and a majlis or a formal dining room may be conditioned only when it is used. A property closed up for a month while the family travels is the extreme version, and it is a common one.

The practical answer is not to run the cooling constantly. It is to build the furniture so that cycling does not matter.

How that is built around

Wide surfaces are engineered rather than solid. A stable core with a real timber veneer over it stays flat, because the core barely moves and the veneer is too thin to force it. Good workshops use it because it is right for a wide panel, not because it saves money. It also carries a better figure of grain than a solid board of the same cost, since a decorative log can be sliced into many leaves instead of cut into a few thick boards.

Solid timber goes where movement is safe. Frames, legs, rails, edges and mouldings are narrow in the direction that moves, so the actual dimensional change is small enough not to matter. That is why a well made piece is usually a mix: solid where it can be, engineered where it should be.

Tops are fixed so they can slide. Buttons, slotted brackets or Z-clips hold a solid top down firmly while letting it change width. It is a small detail and it is the difference between a table that lasts and one that splits.

Panels float in their frames. A door panel sits in a groove with room to expand and is never glued at its edges.

All faces get finished. Including the underside of a top and the back of a door. An unfinished face exchanges moisture faster than a finished one, so finishing one side only builds a permanent imbalance into the piece and it cups towards the sealed face.

Species, honestly

Once construction is right, species is mostly a decision about appearance and hardness rather than survival.

Our wooden furniture is made in beech and oak. Beech is close-grained and even in colour, and it takes turning and shaping cleanly, which is why it earns its place in frames and legs where strength matters more than figure. Oak shows its grain much more once finished, which suits it to the parts of a piece that are meant to be seen rather than hidden under upholstery.

Fitted joinery has a second problem

Free-standing furniture only has to cope with the air. Fitted joinery has to cope with the air and with the building.

Walls are not flat and not plumb, so fitted work is scribed to the wall it meets and cut on site after the plaster rather than to a drawing. And because it is attached to the structure, it cannot move away from it. Before a piece is installed

Let it acclimatise. Timber delivered from a different environment needs time in the room it will live in before it is fixed in place. Installing on the day of delivery locks in whatever moisture content it arrived with.

Finish the building first where possible. Wet trades put a lot of moisture into a space. Plaster and screed both dry for a long time after they look dry, and joinery installed into a damp room will move as the room dries out around it.

Living with it

Expect some seasonal movement and do not treat every hairline as a fault. A door that binds slightly in one part of the year and not another is timber behaving normally.

Keep pieces out of direct sun where you can, since sunlight both dries one face unevenly and changes the colour of most timbers within the first year. Oiled surfaces need feeding occasionally. Lacquered ones do not, but a deep scratch through the film is repaired by refinishing the panel rather than the spot.

And if something does open up, it is usually repairable. A joint that has let go can be cleaned and re-glued properly, which is routine restoration work rather than a reason to replace a piece.

Questions we get asked

Which timber is best for the UAE climate?
The question is less useful than it sounds, because construction decides more than species does. Every timber moves with moisture; they differ in how much and how evenly. A wide panel made from solid boards of any species will eventually cup or split in a room whose humidity swings, and the same panel built as a stable core with a veneered face will not. Choose the species for appearance and hardness, and choose the construction for stability.
Is air conditioning good or bad for furniture?
Constant cooling is fine. Intermittent cooling is the hard case, and it is more common than people think in a villa where rooms are cooled only when occupied. Timber responds to swings, not to absolute levels, so a room that runs at a stable humidity is easier on furniture than one that alternates between cooled and closed up. A holiday home shut for a month is the worst version of this.
Does a lacquer or oil finish stop wood moving?
No, it slows the exchange. A film finish like lacquer slows moisture entering and leaving; an oil finish slows it less. Neither seals timber permanently, and neither removes the need to build for movement. What a finish does do is even out the rate, which is why finishing all faces of a panel, including the underside nobody sees, matters more than the choice of finish.
Why did my table top crack?
Usually because a solid top was fixed so it could not move. Timber changes width across the grain far more than it changes length along it, so a wide top fastened rigidly to a frame at both edges has nowhere to go and relieves the stress by splitting. The fix is in how it is attached, using fixings that let the top slide, not in the timber or the finish.
